Ireland and Spain: ‘A sort of Homecoming’

Celan wrote of poetry ‘as a sort of homecoming,’ and in the case of Ireland and Spain, poetry represents both the place and language of homecoming for poet Keith Payne. From the Atlantic Coast on Inis mór to Dublin, Salamanca and Andalucía till reconnecting again to the Atlantic on the coast of Galicia, Keith follows the poetic line as it leads through language and place, through his own poems and those of the Irish, Spanish and Galician poets who accompany him.

Keith Payne lives in Vigo, Galicia. His poetry, translations, essays and reviews have appeared in international publications such as The Irish Times, The Dublin Review of Books, The Trinity Journal of Literary Translation, Forked Tongues: Galician, Catalan and Basque Women’s Poetry in Translations by Irish Writers, Ed. Manuela Palacios, (Shearsman, 2012), Mountain-Islandglacier (Broken Dimanche Press, 2012) and stories from Victor Balcells Matas Yo mataré monstruos por ti (I will kill monsters for you, Editorial Delirio, 2010.) He has translated poems by Jaime Gil de Biedma, Juan Gelman, Óscar Oliva, Efraín Huerta, Víctor Hugo Diaz and Andrés Catalan among others. A regular reader of his poetry, Keith has represented Ireland at international festivals including FACYL (Festival Internacional de Artes de Castilla y León), the Festival Internacional de Poesía de la Ciudad de Mexico, 2013 (The International Poetry Festival of the City of Mexico, 2013) and The Rámon López Velarde International Poetry Festival, Zacatecas, Mexico. His debut collection Broken Hill was published in 2015 by Lapwing Publications. Keith has been a recipient of Arts Council of Ireland funding for professional development.
