Dorothée Behr is a senior researcher at GESIS - Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (Mannheim, Germany), specialized in the translation of questionnaires for cross-cultural surveys and in cross-cultural web probing. She leads the ‘Cross-cultural Survey Methods’ team at GESIS and currently also a project on empirically testing the influence of translator background on questionnaire translation and data quality. She provides consultancy and teaching on questionnaire translation, and was leading the development of the translation guidelines for PIAAC’s background questionnaire (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies, OECD). She is keen on interdisciplinary exchange, having, for instance, co-organized the OECD-GESIS Seminar on Translating and Adapting Instruments in Large-Scale Assessments (2018), with presenters and participants cutting across disciplines. She is a trained translator, holding a doctorate in Applied Translation Studies. Her scientific interests include questionnaire translation as well as cross-cultural web probing methodology.  

 

Brita Dorer is a senior researcher at GESIS – Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences (Mannheim, Germany), specialized in the translation of questionnaires for cross-cultural surveys, amongst others, heading the Questionnaire Translation Workpackage of the European Social Survey (ESS). She has also been involved in the questionnaire design process in the ESS, focusing on the translatability and intercultural portability of the source questionnaire, and providing consultancy on questionnaire translation and translatability to other cross-cultural survey projects. She is a trained translator and a translation scholar, holding a doctorate in Translation Studies with experience in teaching practical translation as well as translation methodology. Her scientific interests include the evaluation and quality enhancement of questionnaire translation, translatability of source questionnaires, machine translation and translation process research / cognitive translation studies.
